The Southwell Collective are currently writing a new score for the Jean Epstein's 1928  film "The Fall of The House of Usher".

Edgar Allan Poe's classic gothic horror story has been filmed many times over the years, but no version is as striking as this 1928 masterpiece by Jean Epstein, one of France's leading avant-garde visionaries. The Fall of the House of Usher is pure gothic eye-candy and a must see for all aficionados of silent film.

The Premiere will take place on June 13th at London's Barbican Centre with UK tour dates in the autumn of 2010 to be announced shortly.

Epstein’s classic 1929 documentary-fiction set on a remote island outcrop. A dramatic human story unfolds against the stark beauty of the Brittany landscape. With a new and highly acclaimed score, written and performed live by The Southwell Collective.

The Southwell Collective have been writing and performing live new scores to classic silent films since 2003.
They have already done two highly successful tours in England and Wales of Finis Terrae (88 mins) with St. Kilda (16 mins)  in 2007 and are now planning to bring the film to Scotland in August 2009.

The Southwell Collective is a 5-piece group of clarinet and bass clarinet, oboe, acoustic guitar, percussion and ambient electronics; they travel with their own PA and sound technician and due to the nature of the instrumentation performance space requirements are relatively compact. They will also travel with the film in DVD format for digital screening,  or the original 35mm film is available.
